From 1995 to 2008 I had a daily ritual, kept Monday through Friday, before leaving home and studio to go to work, no matter what was going on, I made one loosely identified self-portrait using self-hardening clay and objects that I had picked up throughout the previous day. Then I scratched the days date into the back of the piece.
These object conjure up impressions and feelings that are not always literal or formed as a complete thought forcing me to work on an intuitive level. The choice to use familiar and found objects made them more than a simple summary of the previous day’s events and instead become a dialogue with my experiences. Each figure is between 3” and 10” in length, each has a special meaning, and the materials added to the clay are considered and chosen to enhance the characteristics I feel lay within the clay figure. This project contains approximately 3,120 figures.
