The Annual
Shrinky Dink Charity Art Invitational has been held for five
years by Zeitgeist.
a unique Seattle, WA space that has been at the forefront of singular
exhibitions since it was founded in 1997.
Initially
sited in the artist housing monument of Pioneer Square's Washington
Shoe Building, Zeitgeist followed that building's five floors of
artist residents when they were evicted. It moved down the street
to premises
that had been a turn-of-the-century
artists' supply store.
The November 2000 Shrinky Dink Charity Art Invitational held
in this new space celebrated by inviting artists from around the
country
and from London to create objects for auction. All were bound by
the single rule: every piece must be made out of the famous 1970s
craft material.
This event benefited Home Alive, the women's safety organization
created in memory of murdered rock singer Mia Zapata. Sarah Hutt was invited
to
represent both the city of Boston and the Northeastern
United States. The artist contributed the piece "Charmed", a charm
bracelet
made
entirely from 'shrinky
dink' plastic.
